What is the Book of Romans About?

The book of Romans’ central message is: the Gospel is God’s power for salvation to anyone who believes. The book was a carefully constructed Christian theology summary. It also explains God's plan of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

When Paul wrote the book of Romans, he had never been to Rome. However, he clearly expresses his desire to travel there in the near future.

The apostle was in Corinth when he was writing the book and his way to Israel to deliver a collection for the poor. On his way to Spain, he planned to visit the church in Rome.

Paul personalized a letter and greeted 26 different people by name. The people had heard of him and felt honored by the letter. He wrote the book (letter) to the believers in Rome and gave them a concrete theological foundation. From there, they can construct their faith and serve God effectively.

Why is the Book so Important?

Many scholars describe the book of Romans as “The Gospel and the Righteousness of God,” which someone can only be received by faith in Jesus Christ’s atoning death. The book reveals the answers to critical questions. It also supplies information on different topics, such as the righteousness of God, spiritual growth, judgment, the sovereignty of God, and salvation.

When people are justified by God, they receive salvation or redemption. However, Paul clarified that believers’ pursuit of God does not stop with salvation because it continues as people are sanctified. The apostle’s treatment of these issues comes with a complete, logical presentation of how someone can be saved from the penalty.

The Book Summary

The book of Romans can be divided into four different sections:

  • Righteousness needed (1:18 to 3:20);

  • Righteousness provided (3:21 to 8:39);

  • Righteousness vindicated (9:11 to 11:36);

  • Righteousness practiced (12:1 to 15:13).

Meanwhile, here are the summaries of Romans 1 to 16:

  • Romans 1: The Gospel is the Power of God

  • Romans 2: The Righteous Judgement of God

  • Romans 3: The Righteous Apart from the Obeying the Law

  • Romans 4: Faith as Means for Justification

  • Romans 5: The Reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ

  • Romans 6: The Freedom from Sin

  • Romans 7: Freedom to Belong to God

  • Romans 8: Live by the Holy Spirit

  • Romans 9: The Children of the Promise

  • Romans 10: The Word of Faith

  • Romans 11: The Israel’s Remnant

  • Romans 12: The Living Sacrifices

  • Romans 13: The Submission to Authorities

  • Romans 14: Everything for the Lord

  • Romans 15: The Unity among God’s Believers

  • Romans 16: The Commendations

The Book Themes

Here are the themes someone will encounter in the book of Romans:

  • People’s natural inclination to sin will separate them from God, and they cannot make themselves right or earn salvation on their own.

  • God’s plan is always fair and just, where both Gentiles and Jews can come to the Lord and receive salvation.

  • The Holy Spirit works in each person to prevent sin while growing in holiness.

  • By not keeping the law, people become acceptable in God’s grace.

  • Sincerity when service the Lord is the right way to express believers’ gratitude to Him for His gift of salvation.

  • People’s acceptance of Christ as Savior and belief in His atoning work will save them; the righteousness of Jesus Christ is credited to them.

  • God offered a way to redeem people through Jesus Christ, who paid their sin-debt through a sacrificial death in His loving kindness.

Book Key Verses

Below are some of the key verses in the book of Romans:

Romans 1:16 – “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of every one who believes, first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.”

Romans 3:19-11 – “But now a righteousness from God apart from the law has been made known, to which the Law and Prophets testify.”

Romans 3:22-24 – “This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”

Romans 5:8 – “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 8:38 – “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Conclusion

The book of Romans stands as the most systematic and clearest Christian doctrine’s presentation in all the Scriptures. The author started the book by discussing humanity’s sinfulness. While humanity is condemned because of rebellion against God, His grace still offered them justification by faith through Jesus Christ.
