Ideas to help you unlock your inner artist

In our modern world of business meetings and school runs and always trying to win at life, it is so easy to lose site of the important things and to constantly chase the game at the detriment to yourself. By the time the weekend rolls around you are so tired that all you want to do is slump down in front of the television or just go to sleep. Each time that happens a little part of you dies and need to be aware of that and take action. You need to find something that is creative and relaxing and which you can use as a counterpoint for all the action of the week. Here are a few ideas you might like.

Artistic licence

Drawing and painting is not everyone’s cup of tea and, unless you are good at them, they can be quite a frustrating. But there is still scope to be creative in other ways. Investigate mosaic tile supplies in your area and buy a batch. It really is very calming, and because it is a little more abstract than drawing it is much easier to be non-judgemental of the work that you produce. Working with the tiles is easy, it’s almost like time stands still. It’s a bit like doing a jig-saw puzzle, except it’s less prescriptive; you can make it up as you go along.

Such a relaxing thing to do, and it’s not just the domain of children’s parties and Waldorf Schools. Making candles is a rewarding exercise both in terms of the process and the end product. And if you really get into it, you could find that you have a nice little side hustle business at the end of it. By Christmas time you could have enough stock to sell at a craft market. It’s also a great thing to do with the rest of the family – just make sure that there is no scope for spilling the boiling wax, if it ends up on the floor it can be a real mission to clean.

We mentioned jigsaws earlier and thought they should probably get a proper mention. Once a staple holiday activity, puzzles are no longer as popular as they once were, which really is a shame. Doing a puzzle is both a commitment and a challenge. Searching for the right piece, watching it all come together, slowly at first and then faster and faster as you get to the end, is a great feeling. It allows you find a place of inner peace and to retreat from the stresses of the everyday rate race.

Such a simple suggestion but sadly it is something that has to be said these days as reading becomes less and less of a habit. And when we say read we mean escapist fiction. If you are wanting to relax and get away from the stresses of everyday life, then you can hardly go and read a business management textbook. Find a good old thriller of the Stephen King or John Grisham variety and devour it. Getting lost in a made up world of action and excitement is one of the best ways to get away from it all.
