6 Types of Doors for Your Home

If you’re currently renovating your home or you’ve just sold your home and are now moving into a brand-new property, it’s always nice to switch up your interior (and exterior) design.

Maybe you plan on buying lots of new accessories and appliances, put down new carpets, or replace the kitchen cupboards. But have you considered replacing your doors?

Getting brand-new frames can transform your home’s appearance. New doors are easy to install and there is a wide range of options out there. Many types of doors are affordable and fully customizable so you can find the perfect styles for your home.

Whether you’re updating the interior doors in your home or you’re searching for a new patio door, you're not short on choice. With several types of doors on the market, you will need to consider its main purpose and your style preferences.

An exterior door needs to be sturdy, secure, and weather-resistant. An interior door may need to match your existing interior design so that it blends seamlessly with the rest of your home.

To make choosing the right types of doors for your home a little easier, here are six types of doors to consider.

  1. Metal Doors

Metal doors can be made from a range of metals but they are most commonly made from aluminium and steel. They tend to be used for exterior doors because metal is durable and resistant to harsh weather conditions.

The downside to aluminium or steel doors is that can rust over time. Using a protective coating can reduce the risk of rusting and maintain the doors for decades longer.

  1. Glass Doors

If you’re after a sleek and stylish finish, glass is a great option. Glass doors are most popular for back doors as they enable you to see out into your garden with an unobstructed view.

For areas where you want some extra privacy, you can get textured glass that prevents outsiders from seeing into your property. The main drawback of glass doors is their price as they tend to be more expensive than other options.

  1. Wooden Doors

Wooden doors are great when you want a classic, vintage style in your home. They come in a range of colours, styles, and finishes so you can easily find something that matches your existing interior design.

Doors that are made out of wood tend to need a protective coating or treatment to prevent wear and tear. Wood isn’t always the best option for exterior doors because it is prone to water damage.

  1. uPVC Doors

uPVC is a type of hard plastic that is made from recycled materials. It is available in several finishes and creates a classic style in your home. Doors that are made out of uPVC can easily be painted a different colour or finish at an affordable price.

You can use uPVC doors for the inside or outside of your home but they are most commonly used for back doors or utility doors because they are water resistant. They’re also great at keeping the heat in your home.

Doors made from uPVC aren’t everybody’s cup of tea but if you don’t mind the style, it’s worth taking a look at the uPVC doors available in your area.

  1. Hollow Core Doors

If your main consideration is your budget and you're looking for an affordable new door, hollow core doors are going to be a great option for you. They're inexpensive yet stylish and functional.

Hollow core doors are most commonly used as interior doors, such as for bedrooms and living rooms. They come in a range of styles and colours so you have a variety of choices. This type of door is made out of wood and often has a gloss coating to protect the wood from water damage and prevent it from cracking or rotting.

  1. Fiberglass Doors

Fiberglass doors are more resistant to damage than wooden or plastic doors. They are highly durable and resistant, and can easily be painted or stained when you want to switch up your interior design.

Fiberglass looks great for exterior or interior doors. Most commonly, they are used for front doors because of their durability and high resistance to the elements. If you want to go for a more homely and classic appearance, you can get a small glass cut-out near the top or at the side of the door.
