Adelaide Plumber Reveals How to Clear a Blocked Drain Without Clearing Your Wallet

There is no denying that one smelly blocked drain can become a massive headache over time. Worse yet, it can cause substantial damage to your once safe and undamaged home. It can also be a massive inconvenience for not just you, but also your whole family.

Blocked drains are a recurring problem for many homeowners over Australia. Before you call a plumber in Adelaide, try out some home remedies for a blocked drain. Here are some ways you can clear a blocked drain without clearing your wallet at the same time.

How to Clear a Blocked Drain

There are many ways that you can remove a blockage in your drain by yourself. However, some of the remedies below can be done by you while others should be left to your local plumber. Let’s take a look!

Boiling Water

One of the most common fixes for blocked drains is to try pouring a pot of blocked water down the drain. This is usually a good way to dislodge or dissolve whatever is blocking the drain. Make sure that if your pipes are PVC, you only use warm water as hot water can damage your pipes.

DIY Natural Cleaner

DIY drain cleaner can be made using bicarb soda and white vinegar. All you need to do is pour one cup of bicarb down the drain and chase it with one cup of vinegar. Make sure you cover the top of the drain to create a seal.

The mixture will scour the pipes to clean them out. You should pour hot water down after half an hour to get rid of any excess debris.

Caustic Cleaner

You can purchase caustic cleaner at your nearest hardware store. This will help to dissolve any hair, grease, or food from your drain. Make sure you wash your pipes down with water afterward to get rid of the chemicals.

Plunger

A plunger is a helpful way to clean out a drain just as it is to clear out a clogged toilet. The up and down vacuumed movements will help to dislodge the blockage.

DIY Drain Snake

A DIY drain snake made from a wire coat hanger with a hook on the end can break up and dislodge blockages in your pipes.

Plumbers Drain Snake

If your DIY drain snake doesn’t work, a plumber’s drain snake may do a better job. It has a rotating end that breaks up and removes blockages.

CCTV

If no other options are working, CCTV can be an excellent help. Much like a drain snake, it will be inserted within the drain to identify where the blockage is and how bad it is.

Hydro Jet

With a hydro jet, powerful streams of water will be shot down the pipe to dislodge the blockage and force it through the pipe.

Excavation

A plumber can repair the pipe with the blockage via excavation. Excavation can be complicated which is why a professional needs to do it.

Pipe Relining

If your pipes are damaged beyond repair, pipe relining may be needed. Resin and flexible tools will be used to reline the pipe after the blockage has been removed.

The Bottom Line

All of these ways to remove a blockage will ensure that the blockage in your drains can be cleared without your wallet being cleared too.
